Hiking and Nature Walks

Hiking

Discover the unique flora and fauna that is found atop Snowshoe's mile high summit. Or, venture into Snowshoe's backcountry and find beautiful waterfalls, scenic overlooks and challenging rock scrambles. With over 11,000 acres of unspoiled wilderness, there's hiking to be found for all. Hiking trail maps are available at The Depot, in the Village, and at the Adventure Outpost near the Shavers Center.  Our Adventure Staff can also give you some tips on the best trails available in the nearby one million acres of the Monongahelia National Forest, which surrounds the resort.

Wanna spend the night in the backcountry?  We have four campsites located on the Cheat Mountain Ridge Trail with fantastic views.  Campsite rentals are just $25 per night.

4 Hiking Trails You'll Love!

Shavers Lake Trail
We recommend this trail for an exceptional family experience.  It follows the contours of our lake and offers a unique view of the basin slopes from the far side.  You will walk past the dam and our compressor house, where you will usually spot a flock of geese.
To access:  Ride down the Ballhooter Lift, taking a right as you exit and looking for a large green hiking only sign at the trailhead.

Bail-Out
Not for the faint of heart, we recommend this difficult trail for hard core hikers only.  It is a short and steep cardio workout!
To access:  To hike this trail uphill, follow the Shaver's Lake Trail to the far end of the dam, cross it and look ahead for the Bail Out exit sign. To hike this trail downhill, hike the Cheat Mountain Ridge Trail to the Fire Tower Trail and take a left at the Bail Out sign.

Cheat Mountain Ridge Trail
This is a wide, graveled fire road with some rolling terrain that takes you to our Back Country Hut.  You'll gaze at the mid-way scenic overlook viewing the Greenbrier River and surrounding hillsides.  Once at Backcountry Hut you can enjoy the peace and quiet on the porch swing!
To access:  Drive or hike the mountain top walking path to the Top of The World parking lot.  Walk toward Sawmill Village and take the gravel road that goes between that entrance and the Snow Crest condos. Look to your left, approximately ¼ mile for the Cheat Mountain Ridge trailhead.  We restrict the use of vehicles on this trail, so we have a rope and closed sign there for that purpose, but the trail is open to hikers and bikers.

6,000 Steps
Originally named by one of our trail crew who reportedly counted his steps while clearing it! This trail utilizes part of a former rail grade from the timber days on Cheat Mountain – keep your eyes peeled and you may see some items left behind by the loggers!  You will be in the middle of a spruce forest, so this is a great hike on a warm day.
To access:  Hike out the Cheat Mountain Ridge trail and take a left at the junction for 6,000 steps.
