High on the list of questions most frequently posed to Snowshoe employees is “What route do you recommend I take to get there?”. Because of Snowshoe’s rugged location and proximity to multiple major cities and road networks, there are lots of possible answers. Whether you’re looking for long straight highways, scenic back roads, convenient midway stops, historical points of interest, or just to get here and get on with the fun, Snowshoe road tripping requires some pre-planning. While modern GPS and smartphone maps are handy, Snowshoe is located in a rural area, and you’ll want to check the turn-by-turn instructions against your plan.

Below are our most recommended routes for driving to Snowshoe quickly and easily from each direction on the compass.


Coming From The:

Clarksburg, West Virginia (108 miles, 2hr 30min)

Parkersburg, West Virginia (185 miles, 3hr 30min)

Altoona, Pennsylvania (271 miles, 5hr) From I-68 West (in Maryland)

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania (215 miles, 3hr 45min)

Morgantown, West Virginia (142 miles, 3hr 30min)

Youngstown, Ohio (252 miles, 4hr 45min)


To Snowshoe:  Take I-79 South to Exit 99/Weston, WV. Take US-33 East (4-lane) to Elkins. Take US-219 South for 48 miles to Snowshoe. Turn left off of US-219 South onto Route 66 East toward Big Springs/The Market/Exxon. Go less than 1 mile to Snowshoe Drive North on the left unless you are lodging at The Inn at Snowshoe or made your reservations through an independent realty company. All are located off of Route 66.

Alexandria, Virginia - From I-66 West  (245 miles 4hr 30min) 

Baltimore, Maryland - From I-95 South to 66 West  (280 miles 5hr) 

Hagerstown, Maryland - From I-81South  (223 miles 4hr 30min)

Harrisburg, Pennsylvania - From I-81 South  (270 miles 5hr)

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania - From I-95 South to I-66 West  (360 miles 6hr 30min)

Wilmington, Delaware - From I-95 South to 66 West  (330 miles 6hr)

Washington DC - From I-66 West  (221 miles 4hr 30min)


To Snowshoe: Take I-66 West to I-81 South. Travel to Exit 296, which is State Route 55 West. Travel on 55 West through Moorefield, WV to Petersburg, WV. At Petersburg you will pick up 28/55 and stay on south 28 for 32 miles… picking up 28/92 South toward Greenbank, WV. Just south of Greenbank turn right onto State Route 66 West. There will be signage for Snowshoe and Cass Scenic Railroad. Continue through the town of Cass making a sharp turn over the bridge and follow 66 West to the first Snowshoe Drive turn on the right unless road conditions are not clear. Continue on Rt. 66 to the second right turn for Snowshoe Drive. If you are lodging at The Inn at Snowshoe or made your reservations through an independent realty company stay on Rt. 66; all are located off of Route 66.

I-64 West to I-81 North to Staunton, VA, West on US-250 for apx. 65 miles , then picking up 28/92 South toward Greenbank, WV. Just south of Greenbank turn right onto State Route 66 West. There will be signage for Snowshoe and Cass Scenic Railroad. Continue through the town of Cass making a sharp turn over the bridge and follow 66 West to the first Snowshoe Drive turn on the right unless road conditions are not clear. Continue on Rt. 66 to the second right turn for Snowshoe Drive. If you are lodging at The Inn at Snowshoe or made your reservations through an independent realty company stay on Rt. 66; all are located off of Route 66.

Blacksburg, Virginia - via 311 N (136 miles 3hr 30min)

Radford, Virginia (148 miles, 3 1/2 - 4 hours)

Roanoke, Virginia (150 miles 3hr)

Greensboro, North Carolina (240 miles 5hr 30min)

Raleigh, North Carolina - Take I-40 to US-220 at Greensboro  (300 miles, 6 hours) 

Winston-Salem, North Carolina - Take I-40 to US-220 at Greensboro  (255 miles 5hr)

To Snowshoe: Take I-81 North to US-220 North to Clifton Forge, Virginia. US-220 North can be taken from Roanoke bypassing I-81. Take I-64 West to White Sulphur Springs, WV. In White Sulphur Springs turn right onto Route 92 North and drive for several miles to Route 66 West. Turn left onto Route 66 West. There will be signage for Snowshoe and Cass Scenic Railroad. Continue through the town of Cass making a sharp turn over the bridge and follow 66 West to the first Snowshoe Drive turn unless road conditions are not clear. Continue on Rt. 66 to the second right turn for Snowshoe Drive. If you are lodging at The Inn at Snowshoe or made your reservations through an independent realty company stay on Rt. 66; all are located off of Route 66.

Atlanta, Georgia - Take I-85 to Charlotte, North Carolina to I-77 North  (550miles 9hr)

Charlotte, North Carolina - From I-77 North (320 miles  5hr 30min)

Columbia, South Carolina - From I-77 North  (400 miles  6hr 30min)

Jacksonville, Florida - From I-95 North  (700 miles 10hr 30min)

Asheville, North Carolina - Take best route to I-81 North  (350 miles 5hr 45min)

Johnson City, Tennessee - Take I-181 to I-81 North  (290 miles 4hr 45min)

Knoxville, Tennessee - Take I-40 East to I-81 North  (365 miles 6hr) 

Nashville, Tennessee - Take I-40 East to I-81 North  (536 miles 8hr 30min)



To Snowshoe: From I-81 North in Tennessee into Virginia, take I-77 North at Wytheville, VA to I-64 East toward Beckley, WV. Take I-64 East to White Sulphur Springs, WV/Exit # 175. Take a left at the bottom of the exit and come to a traffic light. Turn right onto Route 60 East driving through the town of White Sulphur Springs passing The Greenbrier Resort. Turn left onto Route 92 North and drive for approximately 32 miles. Turn left at the stop sign onto 92 North/39 West. 92 and 39 will split; stay left on WV-39 West for several miles to Marlinton, WV driving through the town of Marlinton. 39 ends at a traffic light. Turn right onto US-219 North for 26 miles to Snowshoe. Turn right onto Route 66 East toward Big Springs/The Market/Exxon. Go less than 1 mile to Snowshoe Drive North on the left unless you are lodging at The Inn at Snowshoe or made your reservations through an independent realty company. All are located off of Route 66. 92 and 39 is in a valley, is curvy, but not mountainous.

Alternate #1 To Snowshoe: You may also leave I-64 East at Lewisburg, WV and travel US-219 North for several miles. Turn left onto Route 66 East toward Big Springs/The Market/Exxon. Go less than 1 mile to Snowshoe Drive North on the left unless you are lodging at The Inn at Snowshoe or made your reservations through an independent realty company. All are located off of Route 66. Mileage is less via this route, but US-219 is very mountainous.

Alternate #2 To Snowshoe: You may stay on 92 North at the 92/39 split. From 92 North, turn left onto State Route 66 West. There will be signage for Snowshoe and Cass Scenic Railroad. Continue through the town of Cass, WV making a sharp turn over the bridge and follow 66 West to the first Snowshoe Drive turn on the right unless road conditions are not clear. Continue on Rt. 66 to the second right turn for Snowshoe Drive. If you are lodging at The Inn at Snowshoe or made your reservations through an independent realty company stay on Rt. 66; all are located off of Route 66. 92 is in a valley, is curvy, but not mountainous.

Because of our rural location, GPS units are not always the most reliable source for turn-by-turn directions. Some of the roads in the area are not properly mapped.

We suggest inputting longitude and latitude coordinates, rather than using a street address. Here are some of the coordinates for popular locations on the mountain:
