Another week, another big snow total! Mother Nature has been very kind to Snowshoe this season, and our guests are reaping the benefits! Three inches of fresh powder fell overnight Wednesday, another 3" has already fallen this morning and PLENTY more is on the way. The National Weather Service is predicting up to 6" before Friday morning, and the forecast through Sunday calls for snow Every. Single. Day. You can't ask for much more than that.
We're now up to 164" of snow on the season, and that surpasses our 2005/2006 total. We've now had the snowiest winter in five years. While all of our snow dances have been paying off, we also have to give a big thanks to our snowmaking and grooming team on the mountain. These guys work in sometimes miserable conditions, all night long, to ensure that when rope drop rolls around there are beautiful conditions across the mountain. We got an early jump on snowmaking this season with a very cold November and it has paid off big time. With the exception of maybe a week or two, I don't think we've had an substantial thinning or bare spots all season. Whether it meant moving guns around, reallocating resources or spending time pushing snow around, our Mountain Ops team has ensure that the slopes are in primo conditions all season long.
As we roll into February, it's very season to start talking about the end of the season. But March is one of the BEST times to visit Snowshoe. With the amazing 4+ foot base we have built up, and the average 30" of snow we see in March, the last month of the season is sure to be a memorable one with great conditions right up until the end. March is also billed as "a whole 'nother season" at Snowshoe. This is because you can enjoy those amazing conditions under bluebird skies and increasingly warm temperatures. March is also home to several of our great events. The Homegrown Music Festival, March 6-8, welcomes a number of local performers to the mountain for a weekend of bluegrass, southern rock and county music. We also host the Homegrown Games, which playfully poke fun at Southern stereotypes with contests like bobbing for pigs feet, toilet seat horseshoes and a daisy duke contest. Later in the month, we host the second annual Shades of Cream Champagne and Chocolate Weekend. If you have a sweet tooth, you HAVE to be here for this weekend. It's a delicious weekend of FREE chocolate samples, chocolate infused menus at mountain restaurants and plenty of family-friendly fun. And don't forget that March is also host to our annual Spring Break festivities and our Last Hurrah Weekend, which bids adieu to another fabulous winter.
But before we get ahead of ourselves, there are still FIVE weeks of great skiing and riding left. That's plenty of time to get some more turns in... and Snowshoe is the place to do it. We're headed into our value season, with some of the lowest prices of the year, so make your plans to get up here! I've spent more days on snow this season than ever before, and that's in large part due to the awesome conditions we've had all season. I ventured into the terrain park for the first time earlier this week and I'm pleased to say that my battle wounds are healing nicely, just in time for a great weekend of fun on the slopes!
Think snow!
