Last week was an epic one at Snowshoe. Skiers and riders were treated to some amazing December powder days, as a winter storm pounded the mountain with 17" of natural snow. That accumulation, complimented by the work of our expert snowmaking crew, allowed us to open 19 trails for this past weekend, the most open terrain of the season. On Saturday, Soaring Eagle Express opened for the first time this season, allowing skiing and riding from the main basin area to the South Mountain area.
In addition to superb conditions, over the weekend the slopes were invaded by our annual Subaru Demo Days event. The industry's leaders were on the snow with the latest and greatest ski and snowboard equipment. Skiers and riders were treated to free demos all weekend long.
The terrain park was also active this weekend. The park crew has steadily added to the features available, and they were center stage for the King of the Mountain event. Saturday was the slopestyle and rail competitions, and Sunday the Big Air show was on display in Spruce Glades Terrain Park. Cash and prizes were awarded to the top performers in each competition, and <insert name> walked away with the title of King of the Mountain
It has been a tremendous start to the season, and while we've seen warmer weather the past few days, and rain is expected early this week, there is plenty to look forward to. Colder weather is expected to return later in the week, and our snowmaking crews will be back to work as soon as Mother Nature allows. We already have an 18-30" base across much of the basin area, which will allow us to get through this warm spell.
The cold weather will return just in time for Silver Creek's opening day on Friday, December 14. The Silver Creek area will expand our open terrain by 6-9 slopes (weather dependent) and about 25 acres of skiable terrain. The opening of Silver Creek also means the start of night skiing at Snowshoe, with trails available nightly beginning at 4:30pm. Also on Friday, tubing will debut for the season, with our 5-lane, 600' tubing hill, complete with tow lift, available daily at Silver Creek.
This week also kicks off our adventure activities. Snowmobile and snowcat tours are available as of Monday, Dec 10th, with snowshoeing, cross country skiing and other activities available as natural snow conditions allow. If you haven't seen Snowshoe after dark with one of our adventure activities, this is the year to check it out! Not only do you get a beautiful, adrenaline-fueled ride, but you'll see Snowshoe from a whole different perspective, and get a behind-the-scenes look at what goes on after dark on our slopes.
