Powder has returned to Snowshoe! After a brief warm spell that had many area resorts worried about Christmas business, Mother Nature dumped an early present on Snowshoe, with 8" of white stuff falling Sunday afternoon into Monday morning. Our base is back to two feet across most of the mountain, including the Silver Creek area, which opened on Friday, December 14, and brings the return of night skiing and riding and of course the tubing hill.
In addition to the natural stuff, cold weather has allowed our snowmakers to go back to work. With the exception of a warm night Saturday, the guns have been on around the clock since Friday night, and are expected to remain active for most of the week. The long-term forecast looks favorable, as cold weather, and possibly more snow is predicted in the next few weeks. Because Snowshoe was fortunate enough to have such promising early-season conditions, much of the current snowmaking taking place is focused on expanding the resort's open terrain.
Snowshoe plans to open our three new trails in the South Mountain area by Christmas Day. The trail opening will be an occasion not to be missed, as the first 100 skiers and riders making it to the bottom will receive a free t-shirt commemorating the event. Snowmaking has already begun on these trails, and the natural snow was a great compliment to the work of our snowmakers. Along with the new trails, Widowmaker slope has had almost continuous snowmaking occurring along its length, and plans are to open the classic trail right around the Christmas holiday as well. These slopes will be great additions to the 28 slopes Snowshoe already has open—that's almost 50% of the mountain and the most open terrain in region. In fact, this weekend Snowshoe had as many trails open as all other resorts in North Carolina, West Virginia and Virginia combined! We continue to strive to be the absolute best winter destination in the region, and our hard work means you, the guest, win!
While the snow is the best Christmas present a ski area can receive, there's plenty of other holiday activity occurring around the resort in the next week. The Big Top will host great holiday programs and live performances for kids (and kids at heart), the Skiing Santa and friends will make their annual appearance and of course there are plenty of holiday parties all over the mountain. Be sure to check out the events schedule for more details!
This time of year is truly a magical time, and there's not better place to spend the holidays than in our Winter Wonderland at Snowshoe. There's still holiday availability, but you better act now, because it's going fast!
Happy Holidays and Season Greetings from Your Friends at Snowshoe Mountain Resort.
