Travel Tips - Common Practices and Courtesies

  •  First and foremost, when looking at travel prices, please remember that tax is not included in US prices.
  • There are bed taxes for hotels (ranges in every state) which is not included in the quoted price.
  • Bell Staff are usually tipped $1 per bag.
  • If you need to stay in Washington DC for the night (e.g. You arrive the evening before the pick-up for Snowshoe), it may be more efficient to stay in a hotel located around Dulles Airport. Many of these hotels provide free shuttle services to and from the airport/ the hotel. Washington DC is a considerable distance from Dulles Airport.
  • Shuttle and Taxi prices do not include tips. It is appropriate to tip around 15% of the price, more if you have a lot of luggage.
  • Click here for more information on tipping practices and etiquette. o       Page on tipping etiquette.
  • If you are catching a train or bus, take along some food/ drink, as dining facilities are limited on these services.
  • When you are planning your trip, it may appear more affordable to take typically cheaper forms of transport such as trains and busses to your destination. However, it can often be more economical to fly by the time you take into consideration the incidental costs involved. Consider all the possible ways you can reach your destination and calculate it in a monetary and time sense.
