Snowshoe Conserves 233 Acres of Spruce Forest
|
Snowshoe Mountain Resort has granted a conservation easement covering 233 acres of red spruce forest to the Nature Conservancy. This will restrict development but allows Snowshoe to retain ownership of the land and make it available for low impact recreation, like cross country skiing, horseback riding and hiking. The Cheat Mountain spruce forests are home to the rare West Virginia northern flying squirrel and the federally endangered Cheat Mountain salamander. This conservation easement is the first in the State to meet the requirements of a Habitat Conservation Plan. Ed Galford, Snowshoe's Vice President of Mountain Operations, noted "Snowshoe is very proud to be a part of this unique partnership between private and public enterprises.
